The SabreThe sword with which Samuel Parkes VC won the Victoria Cross

It is a standard issue battered cavalry sabre. I have been in possession of this since I was eighteen years of age. It has been part of the family since Samuel’s death, his brother somehow came into possession of the sword, he passed it on to his son Henry (mother’s great-grandfather).

It has been passed down the family ever since.

I have the most vivid memory of my mum being most worried about the sword being in the hands of my mother’s Uncle Fred. She was absolutely certain that he was determined to sell it. One day in 1958 (I was eighteen years old at the time), my mother, desperately worried about the sword, asked me to take her to Uncle Fred’s house in Stoke on Trent.

She also asked me, that if she was successful in retrieving the sword, would I then undertake the guardianship of it and promise to take care of it for the rest of my life and ensure that it would remain in the keeping of the family for ever. She also asked me to try to solve the mystery of where he lay and to find the whereabouts of his Victoria Cross I made that promise.
